Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued in the next yard.
Only one White House dog - a Beagle -- has ever made the American Kennel Club's record books: Greeson's Chum, affectionaly known as J. Edgar (after J. Edgar Hoover), won second place in the Chambersburg (Pennsylvania) Beagle Club Trial in 1966. His owner was President Lyndon Baines Johnson.
