You've gotten this far, which means you've probably gone thru my Projects page, my Basics page, and done a search for "Ametek" on the www.otherpower.com discussion board and found some more info on the www.tlgwindpower.com/ametek.htm site.  These "Ametek" motors were originally designed to power reel to reel tape drive units, like the ones you see in the background of old tech movies where they have what looks like a bank of computer stuff running.  These units are well built and can withstand some pretty harsh conditions.  The "surplus" quantity of these motors is limited.  That is why we are starting to see the prices rise.

"Ametek" motors are 4" in diameter and can be mounted in many different ways.  Be careful when clamping on the motor body, this might cause the bearings to bind, if the body is distorted.  Since they were designed to be "face" mounted, I came up with the adaptor plate design.  This utilizes four 10-32 or M5 screws to retain the motor.  The plate is held securely to the pivot with two 3/8-16 pieces of "all-thread" with a piece of pipe for a spacer.  It is this spacer design that adds to the strength of the mount.  The (3/8 dia.) mounting hole spread on the adaptor plate is the same as a standard car alternator.  Which means that if you wanted, you could mount an "Ametek" generator in the place of a car alternator.  (Something to think about)

Here is a picture of the parts required for a "Basic" Ametek windmill.  Oh, I left out one thing,.. the tail or vane.

Who says that you need a big windmill tower?  All you need is a good open area with nothing that blocks the wind.

In windmills, size does matter.  The smaller motor shown here tops out at about 100 watts (for me).  Where as the larger one is capable of about 200 watts.  Now if that is not enough for you, please check out the Fisher & Paykel units.  (600 watts!)
